Roth vs Traditional: A Decision Tree, Not a Debate
Stop reading listicles. Answer three questions and you'll know which one is right for you.
Question 1: Do you expect to be in a higher tax bracket in retirement than you are now? If yes, lean Roth. If no, lean Traditional.
Question 2: Do you value flexibility (Roth wins — you can withdraw contributions penalty-free) or maximum current-year tax deduction (Traditional)?
Question 3: Is your employer match generous? Take it first, in whichever account it lives, before optimizing further.
You don't have to pick one forever. Most people should end up with both — the tax diversification is a feature, not a bug.
